Asian Pacific American Vagina Monologues (APAVM) Raises
Over $23,000 For Women’s Organizations

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – With unprecedented ticket sales and generous support from community members, small businesses, and grassroots fundraising efforts, the Asian Pacific American Vagina Monologues raised nearly $23,000 for two women's organizations committed to ending violence, of all kinds, for women and girls. Proceeds will benefit the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF) Bay Area and V-Day.

This centerpiece presentation for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month had an outpouring of support with nearly 1000 attendees crowding the historic Castro Theatre. With creative direction from acclaimed actor and director, Gabrielle Padilla-Patacsil and executive and managing producers, Julia H. Rhee and Linda Yang, this historic performance featured a cast and production team of all Asian Pacific American women.

Congresswoman Judy Chu, the first Chinese American elected to the House of Representatives, and current chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) commended the landmark event.

“This wonderful production highlights the dangers and discrimination that women face each and every day, particularly among the Asian American Pacific Islander community. Themes of social, economic and political equity for all women are intricately woven into this performance that is as much about social commentary as it is about entertainment. ”

Local elected officials were also in attendance to show their support for the event including San Francisco Supervisor David Chiu, Oakland Commissioner Vien Truong, and others.

“The Vagina Monologues have become a source of strength and empowerment for so many women who dedicate their time to the cause and their community events. It provides a safe space to share, be vulnerable, and find support and acceptance,” noted director Gabrielle Padilla-Patacsil.

The production was a resounding success in garnering generous coverage ranging from the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle and ethnic press like Audrey Magazine, Hyphen Magazine, Angry Asian Man, 8Asians, and promotional partners like the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM).

“The APAVM shows us the impact that APA women have when we make ourselves visible. We are powerful beyond imagination and we are transforming the world to be more just and inclusive. This is a very proud moment in the herstory of NAPAWF,” said Executive Director of NAPAWF, Miriam Yeung.

NAPAWF Bay Area and V-Day San Francisco were the co-presenters for this production.
